Moringa Oleifera
Description: Moringa Oleifera is a fast growing, tropical tree that is resistant to drought. The leaves are very nutritious and the seeds are a good source of protein and a clean burning oil. Seed cake (ground up seeds) are also useful for purifying water. The fruit of the Moringa tree resemble drumsticks and are eaten like asparagus. The Moringa tree also bears white flowers which have a light fragrance and are also edible.
Planting Instructions: Seeds germinate after 3-15 days. Transplanting is not recommended since the root system is delicate for the first year. Moringa trees prefer sandy soil with good drainage, and although they can survive drought (due to a small reservoir that forms just below the crown), they prefer regular watering. This plant does not tolerate frost and should be covered, or brought inside wherever and whenever temperatures drop below 'cold'.
Common Usage: Due to it's high nutritional content, Moringa is used as a plant based nutritional supplement in many tropical countries. There are reports of Moringa being used to battle many different issues related to nutritional deficiency. Moringa is used in African and Indian countries to treat diabetes, to increase milk flow in lactating mothers and to treat malnutrition among other things.
